OUR MISSION

SUPPORT INDIGENOUS COMMUNITIES' ECONOMIC GROWTH IN SOUTH AMERICA

WHO DOES MADE IN THE ANDES SUPPORT?

Our artisans come primarily from the mountainous zone of Otavalo in Ecuador. This area has been characterized by its excellent hand-made crafts and a rich indigenous culture, which is reflected in its art and traditions.

These communities have been able to sustain their families economically and have also developed a unique identity promoting traditional Andean designs.

WHAT IS THE ECONOMY IN THE AREA?

  • Otavalo is the seat of the largest artisanal market in South America.
  • 60% of the inhabitants of the region dedicate themselves to artisan production.
  • Since the time of the Incas, these communities have been merchants. In that time, they were called “Mindaláles” (groups of indigenous peoples that traveled through the Americas exchanging their products).
  • Modern generations in the sector maintain the tradition of traveling, bringing their culture throughout the world as a form of life.
  • Tourism in the area represents a significant part of the economy for its inhabitants. Eighteen percent of tourists in Ecuador will visit the area.

COMMUNITY IMPACT

Despite their rich culture and hard work, this Andean zone continues to face many economic and social challenges. According to an analysis of the city government, 68.6% of Otovalens live in poverty and 44% face extreme poverty, in which even their basic necessities are not met.

Our mission is to support economic development in the region and create an impact for communities in need
